The new copper chalcogenide cluster [Cu40Se16(S-C6H4-CN)8(dppm)8] (1) with nitrile groups in the organic ligand shell has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. The arrangement of the chalcogen atoms in 1 is similar to a close packing and is best described as two parallel layers with an ab stacking sequence. The resulting structure is a rare example of a disc-like cluster molecule.
